In January of 2011 we received a phone call that there was a baby boy waiting for us. Now here we are January 14, 2012 taking our boy to the temple to be sealed together forever. Words cannot describe...

Here we go... on our way to be a forever family

Joshie wanted to take a bit of a detour

Zoe would not leave his side for a second! All week long she would say, "Josh, we are going to the temple! We are going to be sealed together forever! This means a lot in Zoe's tender heart."

Just about ready to enter the temple.

The sealing ordinance is simple yet powerful.

We are an eternal family.

That smile melts my heart.

Joshua, this was such a special day. I will forever hold a picture in my heart of our family together in the temple. It truly was Heaven on Earth.

Homeschool!!!!!!

Yep, that's right... today was our first day of homeschool with Caleb. It has been years of research, pondering, questioning, practicing, and conversing with the hubby. Caleb has always struggled in school and this year, after weeks of coming home in tears, and questioning himself... homeschool it is. I asked Mary if she would like to do homeschool, but she said she wanted to stay in school so she could be in the school play. Good for you, Mary! Mary knows that homeschool is always an option if she would like to jump aboard!

Nervous? Yes
Inadequate? Yes
Chaotic Schedule? Yes
Totally worth it? Yes

We had a glorious first day of homeschool together. We did a bit of work, and then ran some errands together. It was wonderful just to be together and stress free.

Tonight, Caleb asked if he could say the family prayer. This was his prayer,
"... thank you for the wonderful, wonderful, fun day I was able to have with independent study. Bless me to know how much work this is for mom and bless me to show my appreciation."

And that, my friends, is why homeschool is going to be a wonderful, wonderful adventure.

Happy Adoption Day, Mary!

Dear Mary,

On January 8th we celebrated your adoption day. I asked you where you wanted to go for your special day. You wanted to go to Fuddruckers. I was happy to go because I love their french fries and cheese dip! You were happy to go because you love their quarter machine of squishies, and you love their game in the arcade with the arm that gives you a prize.

Yep, that was fun. But my favorite part of adoption day is sitting down with you and looking at your baby book. You were the most adorable baby girl! This year we talked about how you came to us as Maria, and why we changed your name to Mary once the adoption was finalized. You told me you liked the name Maria. I do too. We also spoke about your birth mom. I asked you if you wanted me to tell you more information and you said no. I respect that. You let me know when you are ready.

Mary, you are beautiful. You are strong. You are tender. I love you with all my heart.

Happy Martin Luther King Day

Monday was Martin Luther King Day. We always have the day off school and maybe mention Martin Luther King and talk about his role as a civil rights leader. This year felt different to me. I really wanted to honor Dr. King by talking about his dream and what it means to our family.

We colored our nation's flag, watched Martin Luther King's speech on Youtube, and recorded our own dreams.

This is Mary's Dream:
My dream is for Cheetahs and all animals to be happy and not go extinct. I do not want any animal to be shot, hunted for fur, trapped, or killed. All animals should be respected and left in piece. I want all animal and humans to have a home, food be happy and most important have a familly!

This is Zoe's dream in picture. I think she was supporting Mary's dream.

This is Caleb's dream:
My dream is for everyone to be friends and for everyone to forgive to animals and people alike.

As I listened and read Martin Luther King's speech, I became teary and really felt the powerful message of his dream. The part that impacted me most was this, "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." As he said those words I pictured my four children. My children are living his dream. Years ago, our family would not have been accepted in society like we are today. I hope I would have had the courage to stand as he did and say, "Let freedom ring!"

Christmas Day 2011

Well, the reindeer food worked because Santa definitely found Grandma's house!!

This cutie took a huge bite out of his new foam football about 30 seconds after he took it out of his stocking.

This boy's wish came true when he discovered that Santa brought him the Lego Harry Potter Wii game.

Beautiful Mary got a pearl headband and necklace.

The kids were really cute this season and throughout the whole month of December wrapped presents to each other. Mary just opened her present from Caleb which was his whole collection of squishies. She was elated!

Christmas eve has always been my favorite part of Christmas. This year was no exception. Here was our special Family Home Evening:

This was Mary's first time reading the Christmas story. This year was "Rudolph"

Everyone chose their costume this year for the nativity. We had 3 angels, 2 donkeys, Mary, and a wiseman. Maybe next year I'll be a bit more put together for the nativity story.

EJ and Angie sang such a beautiful song about the Savior's birth.
I love listening to them sing.

December 19, 2011 marks the birth of our family... again!!

In the courtroom... the kids were a bit intimidated.

This judge created such a warm, and loving experience in the courtroom. She said that the 2 best things a judge gets to do is perform marriage and adoption ceremonies because these create families. In my heart, this judge is performing a miracle... she is blessing me with the opportunity to be a mother to this child, and for us to be a family. She performs heaven's work.
Childbirth is a miracle... adoption is a miracle...

The judge asked Caleb, "What does it mean to adopt?"
Caleb gave a heartfelt reply with tears in his eyes, "It means Josh is a part of my family, my brother."

The judge asked if Ben and I promise to love Josh and provide him with all that he needs (I know she worded it a bit different, but that's what I heard). We both took our turn, raised our hand and said, "Yes!"

She then asked each one of the kids if they would love Josh. Each one took their turn and said, "Yes!"

13 Years

Ben and I celebrate 13 years together this month! So we spent a spectacular 3 full days together while grandma and grandpa watched the kids for us. Thanks Mom & Dad!

Here was our weekend of splendor:

Day One:
Hiking the Matt Davis - Steep Ravine Loop around Stinson beach. This hiking trail was amazingly lush with water falls. We would occasionally find these fun bridges to cross. The weather was perfect. Could not have been a more perfect hike.

Normally I would call this picture a photo bomb... but Ben loves it. So this one's for you, babe! Ben looks so scary when he makes a funny face!

We spared no expense this year and stayed in the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco! This definitely added to the "spectacular-ness" of the weekend!

Cirque Du Soleil was amazing! Ben and I both loved the unicyclists balancing/ tossing bowls on their heads... definitely a favorite act!

Day Two:
Hiking the Golden Gate Bridge. This was the first time Ben and I walked across the entire bridge and back. It is always a stunning experience to visit the Golden Gate.

As expected, a quite windy day!

As we were getting ready to head down to Carmel, our car was smoking and leaking some liquid all over the parking lot. Did that stop the party? Oh no! A quick stop to Kragen, pop the hood, Ben dirties up his hands a bit, and in no time the car is back on track to Carmel. I love that we stay at the Ritz-Carlton in a beat-up, smoking Pacifica that barely runs! I love that car.

Day Three:
We stayed at the Hyatt Highlands Inn in Carmel. It was luxurious. This was the view from our room.

This was breakfast. Yes, it is December and we are eating outside in this picture perfect scene. It felt too good to be true.

Ben and I did plenty of hiking, so we decided to experience Carmel on a bike. We had so much fun! Why were helmets optional, though? I kept imagining Ben face-planting off the cliff! It was humbling to ride a bike because at one point I thought my lungs were going to implode and I had to jump off before my heart gave out. I was just hoping none of my Step or Zumba peeps would witness that! Luckily I was disguised in my helmet.

We biked and hiked around Point Lobos. This was definitely a highlight of the weekend for both Ben and I. It was breath-taking.

I did not do a good job of documenting Thanksgiving this year, but we had a great one! Grandma and grandpa transformed their garage into a playground of swings, tables of artwork, and cooking crafts. We enjoyed our thanksgiving feast in the garage as well!

I did document our attempt at creating oreo cookie turkeys. The girls did a fabulous job! Crafty projects are not my forte, but every now and then I give it a shot...

Josh found grandmas tupperware drawer while we were cooking and he was very pleased about that.

A very grateful Thanksgiving season!!!

One of the reasons I love Ben's b-day is that it gives me the opportunity to blog about all the crazy/amazing stuff that he does with his life.

Here's just a few of the happenings in my hubby's life as of late:

1) Sim Wars - this is a competition that was developed a few years back for emergency medicine education. They have a team of medical professionals (doctor, nurse, anesthesiologist, etc.) There are robots that act as patients, and the team is given a situation and they have to simulate the experience as if it were real and come up with a diagnosis. This is done in front of a live audience and judges.

Ben was asked by Highland Hospital to be the lead doc for their team. Highland had never entered the competition before. UC San Fran has won for the past 3 years. So Highland only wanted to enter if they felt strongly that their team could make a good name for themselves. Well, Ben definitely made a good name for them. Highland won the whole competition!! Ben said it was nerve-wracking being in front of all those trained docs in the audience and being judged on your work. But he did it! Ben is a Sim Wars Champion!

2) Urban Warfare Training - FEMA (Federal Emergency Managment Agency) developed this urban warfare training program to train military, law enforcement, and critical care teams on how to provide disaster relief and humanitarian aid. Ben signed up to be one of their volunteer emergency doctors. He said it was pretty wild. These are the pics that I must caution you about... they are disgusting.

3) Ben turns 35! We decided to celebrate with Cowboy Cookies this year.

Dear Josh,

At one year old you love to play with balls... especially Caleb's football. I'm so impressed with your skills already! Whenever you get a bit restless or sad, you love your pacifier and blankie. You are such a cuddle bug! You have the best, most infectious smile! You keep me on my toes all day long... playing in the toilet and bathroom cabinets, pushing all the printer and fax buttons, exploring the stereo system, and diving off the fireplace. No matter what type of barricade I produce, you can get around it in no time flat. It is quite impressive. Your brother and sisters do a remarkable job helping me keep you alive!! I love how busy, curious, and happy you are!

On your birthday I thought about your birth mom. I'm sure she is thinking about you today and loving you... this is an important day for her too. I love her for being your birth mom.

Joshie, I wonder how I got lucky enough to be your mom! I love that when you get fussy I know just what will soothe you. I love that when you see me, you excitedly crawl to my leg and pull up, letting me know you want me to hold you. I love that you nuzzle your head in my neck. I love that you giggle when I kiss your ear! We are so lucky that we found each other! But in my heart I know that it wasn't luck... Heavenly Father knew that somehow we would make a good team.

Disney On Ice

2011 Bancroft Walk-A-Thon

The 2011 Bancroft walk-a-thon was a huge success!

Each grade level had an hour to run as many laps as they could to earn money for Bancroft! These kids wanted to earn lots of money!

That's my boy!

Mary and Isa were kind enough to take a break to snap a picture with me. This was my 2nd year as the MC. I had a pretty good playlist this year! Everyone was singin' and dancin'!

The cheerleaders kept us going strong!

After each lap the kids would run through the balloon arch to get their running bibs marked.

After the run, I led the kids in some cool-down stretches.

Caleb's teacher, Mrs. Davis, with her adorable baby girl... Joshie's soon-to-be girlfriend!

At the end, each kid got stamped the number of laps they ran. They also got a goodie bag.

This is definitely my favorite fundraiser of the year.

We hopped in the car, strapped up, and the next thing I know when I looked in the rear view mirror there was this beautiful Cheetah Fashionista!

You asked me to do your hair in a side ponytail, then you did the rest and came in and told me to take a picture.

You wanted to eat an orange, but the juice kept squirting you in the eyes. Problem solved.

This is you on your first day of preschool this year. I'm so happy I get to have you for one more year before kindergarten because my days are so much happier when I am with you. I love you to pieces! I am so lucky that you are my daughter!

Zoe's ARF Birthday

Zoe is 5!!

To celebrate this year, Zoe decided to have her birthday party at ARF (Animal Rescue Foundation). This was one of the funnest birthdays yet! To prepare to party with the cats and dogs. We prepped the food in style:

After the tour, Zoe and all of her friends got to adopt their own cat or dog.
Zoe was a bit apprehensive at first.

Next stop was to the store to buy all the necessary animal supplies.

One of the best parts of the party was having Skipo come in.
Everyone got to pet her and shake her hand.

Zoe had an extra special visit from Mrs. Perona at her party. All the kids were so happy to see her! Mrs. Perona was first on Zoe's invitation list.

Napa Getaway

Ben and I decided to take advantage of these weekends off work and get to know each other again. So we took a weekend getaway in Napa. Absolutely perfect! (except we forgot the camera and had to use our iphones)

We hiked Mt. Saint Helena. It was 10 miles round trip, and paved most of the way... so it was perfect. We felt quite accomplished, but both of us could barely walk the next day!

It was so fun to talk about what the future holds for us. Where should we settle? Should we put an offer on the 6,000 sq foot home or the home with the olympic size pool and drop down movie screen in the backyard??? What???? Who 'da thunk we'd ever have conversations like that!!!

Venessa's Baptism:

We were so excited to be a part of Venessa's baptism. Afterwards we had a family dinner at Cattlemens. The El Dorado crew then moved to Utah. We miss them!

The Crans came and spent the night with us so they could help us with sharing time on Sunday in primary. We talked about what a blessing it was to be sealed in the temple as a family.

1) In Ben's previous life he was a pack mule. This man knows how to pack it on like no other!

We rented tandem bikes and rode through Camp Richardson. I wish I had a full pic of this. Ben is in front, Caleb is riding tandem, and the trailer is attached with Zoe and Josh.

Lake Tahoe Water Skiing

We wanted one last hurrah before school started (and we needed to celebrate that fact that Ben will have 2 weekends off a month now!) so we took the fam to Lake Tahoe.

The best part of our trip was learning to water ski! Such a blast!

Caleb was the first one out and he did amazing! He was really skiing! We had the best ski instructor. She would help pull us up to standing. She helped us all feel successful!

Mary was next. She was amazing too! Her smile in this pic says it all!

I left the kids with Ben Saturday morning to go teach a Zumba class. I came home and found this contract on my computer desk. This is what is says:

I can't believe we did! Ben graduated from residency!

I woke up the morning of residency graduation (Ben was working... grrr...grrr...) and came out to find this adorable picture collage of Ben and I, hershey kisses, and a note saying Happy Graduation. Thanks, babe, what a fun surprise! We really did it!

I'm Grumpy

Its true... I am definitely a happy person by nature, but right now I am grumpy and thought I would get it out of my system, by doing a therapeutic post.

Ben graduated from residency on Friday (yes, very exciting, more posts on that when I am over this grumpy spell). We barely made it to graduation because Ben was working that day at UCSF. Then he worked on Saturday, then he worked on Sunday. Wait a second... I thought the crazy hours of residency were over!!!!

So here I am on a Sunday afternoon with my 4 kiddos wondering what to do. Mary sprained her ankle, so she is limping around, which puts a damper on our usual Sunday afternoon walk. We all need a bit of fresh air and sunshine, so I have the brilliant idea of going on a bike ride (easy on the ankle) to the park. I have to be very strategic because Mary is afraid of riding a bike. I bring lots of fun snacks, and LOTS of chocolate hershey kisses. After taking an hour to pack everything up, load the big kids on their bikes, Joshie in the stroller, we are off.

It actually started off surprising well. We stopped every few feet to fuel up with a hershey kiss, so it took us about an hour to get to the park which is a mile from my house. It didn't matter though, because we were enjoying the sunshine and everyone was smiling. We made it to the park, enjoyed some snacks, enjoyed some swinging and climbing, but it all went downhill when I said it was time to go.

The whining started right away. Caleb hopped on his bike, ready to ride and slowly hung out as Zoe and Mary (in voices that were hard to understand) told me why they could not ride home. I explained that if they made it home, they could have a handful of hershey kisses (nothin' wrong with bribery my friends)! That got us about 100 feet. Then Mary throws her bike down and says it doesn't work. I'm "frustrated" at this point and try to remember we are in public. I look at her bike, roll it, and sure enough the piece of yarn that Mary found at the park is now tangled up in the tire and won't let it roll. I then heave the bike into the field and try to figure out how to get Mary home with a sprained ankle.

Somehow I was smart before I left and thought it would be a good idea to bring the double jogging stroller, in case I need extra cargo space. I told Mary to climb into the stroller next to Josh. She climbed in with some relief (I think she thought I would leave her there). I then bribed a very tired Zoe that if she made it home on her bike she could have lots of chocolate kisses. With a desperate look, she started pedaling. We made it another 300 feet and Zoe just can't take it anymore. She is totally beat. At this point, Caleb is no where to be found and I rationalize that he is 11 years old and completely capable of making it home on his own safely. I ask Zoe if she can at least make it to Safeway at the end of the trail. Through her tears she trudges on. I am getting some sympathetic looks from passersby as they see my baby and 9 year old daughter crouched in a stroller and my 4 year old crying on her bike. We barely make it to Safeway, I park Zoe's bike, move Josh onto Mary's lap, and put Zoe in Josh's seat in the stroller. I now push over 100 lbs of children down Bancroft Blvd. The tires are totally pressurized flat on the sidewalk, but I just keep pushing. My cell phone is ringing off the hook as Caleb tries to figure out where we all are. He has made it home, back around town, and home again. As I assure him we are almost home he asks me if I am okay because I am talking funny. I told him I was having some trouble pushing a 100 pound stroller, talk on the phone, and breathe all at the same time.

We did make it home, and I packed everyone in the car to go pick up the bikes. The good news? Everyone made it home intact and we had hot dogs for dinner.

At the days end, I email Ben to set up a planning meeting to discuss better work hours now that we are residency graduates. Ahhhh...I am slowly feeling my grumpiness dissipating.

Zoe found my swimsuit cover-up, fixed her hair in a fancy up-do,

grabbed some of my flower pens, and asked if I would take her picture.
Pure cuteness, I tell you!!!

We spent the 4th of July afternoon making these fun treats. I felt quite festive!

Caleb taught us about the flag, and Zoe taught us Yankee Doodle Dandy. Did you know when yankee "stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni" its not talking about pasta? Apparently macaroni refers to the high fashion in France. That makes more sense. Thanks, Zoe!

We were able to spend part of the 4th with my grandpa who was an air force pilot during WWII. I am so grateful that he was not called to fight overseas, but he was willing to do that for our country and I find that so brave and admirable. Thanks, Grandpa, for serving our country!

(My grandpa, Uncle Mac, and a friend telling us stories of growing up during the depression, serving in the air force, and important life lessons. Valuable lessons from valiant men.)

I've had a couple of interesting conversations as of late...

Our family was standing in line at Gilroy Gardens to go on the balloon ride. A sweet 10 year old girl was standing in line right beside me. She was staring at cute Joshua, oohing and aahing. Then she asked, "Is he your son?"
I knew the type of conversation that was going to ensue, and I was not in the mood. I answered...
"Yes, he is."
Girl: "Is he adopted?"
I ignored this question in hopes I wouldn't have to continue this conversation, but alas...
Girl: "Is he adopted?"
Me: "Yes he is." I then turn my back to give the clue that I am done talking... didn't work.
Girl: "What happened to his parents?"
My eyes open a bit wider and I notice my kids staring at me inquisitively...
Me: With a softened heart, I reply, "Those are personal questions meant only for our family. Thank you for understanding."
Girl: "He is cute."
Me: "He sure is!"

Just a few days ago the kids and I were driving home from Lawrence Hall of Science and I said, "Caleb, you are almost 11 years old! At 3:00am you will be 11!"

I could sense Mary's understanding and perception of that statement. She said, "You know that because you are his real mom." My heart skipped a beat, and I immediately replied, "I'm everyone's real mom." With an urgency in his voice, Caleb chimed in, "Yes, mom is everyone's real mom." I recognized this as an important moment of communication, I took a moment's pause, and this is what came out...

"Oh, I think what you must be talking about is a birth mom. I do know what time Caleb was born because I am his birth mom. Everyone in this car has a different birth mom... me, Caleb, Mary, Zoe, and Josh. But everyone in this car has the same real mom... me." Immediately, the urgent feeling of anxiousness left as this turned into a simple lesson of semantics.

We celebrated Caleb's 11th birthday by taking an overnight trip to Gilroy Gardens.
Definitely a fun celebration!

A few months ago (just days after we got Josh!) Ben had to present some research papers in Colorado at a medical convention. We decided it would be fun to turn it into a father/son trip. So Ben took a very excited Caleb out of school and off they went to snowy Colorado.

I've always known that my kids are super duper... that's the great thing about being a mom! Bancroft school seems to recognize my kid's super duperness too and has given them lots of awards!!

Mary received an award for Perseverance, which is so true of Mary. She is such a hard worker and doesn't give up!

Caleb received an award for Effort, which fits him to a T! He always gives 100%. Caleb received this award last year too. He tries so hard in all he does.

Caleb was awarded double at this ceremony because he received the Presidential Physical Fitness award! Yippee! That makes me so proud! Only 3 4th graders earned this fitness award! Way to be fit, Caleb!

This picture is supposed to be of Caleb receiving his Arrow of Light Award and Webelos Badge. I was so excited to see Caleb graduate from cub scouts and receive these special awards. Caleb was excited too. Unfortunately, I thought it was on Thursday instead of Wednesday. My friend (and Caleb's scout leader) texted me and said "where are you". I had everyone bathed, in bed, Josh was out cold... but we got everybody up and raced to the church to see if perhaps they were running late, but to no avail. Everyone was leaving as we were getting there. I was so bummed out, feeling a bit teary. Caleb was so disappointed as well, but he kept telling me it was okay. After we got home, I put everyone back to bed (no small feat these days) then Caleb and I drowned our sorrows in chocolate ice cream and So You Think You Can Dance. Somehow things looked up after that.

Zoe's Preschool

My heart does a little dance as I think about preschool with Mrs. Perona this year. She was such a blessing in mine and Zoe's life. Zoe knows her ABC's, her 123's... and I had nothing to do with it! Most importantly, Zoe felt so excited to go to preschool each Tues and Thurs. She loved singing, learning, writing her name, watching caterpillars become butterflies, help take care of the baby chicks, she just loved Mrs. Perona. Thank you, Linette! You are amazing!

Caleb decided to give track a try this season, since he was such a superstar in cross-country. Caleb is a superb runner, but didn't have the best experience with the team. I'm so proud of him for sticking with it until the end of the season. Good work, Caleb!

Kentucky Derby

Mary's activity day leaders decided to have a Mother/Daughter Kentucky Derby date!

We had sooooo much fun!

We went shopping for matching outfits. We decided to go with the animal motif.

When we arrived at the party, we received a balloon with our horse's name on it.
Then we made these adorable Kentucky derby hats!

Mary's horse, Animal Kingdom, won first place! Woo Hoo! She was so excited to win a dozen beautiful red roses. My horse came in 2nd, so I won a subway gift card!

Dear Joshua's Birth Mom,

Today is Mother's Day.

This morning I was rocking Joshua to sleep and I couldn't bring myself to lay him in his bed because I was so enjoying cuddling and nuzzling him. I just stared at him and felt so lucky to be his mom. I felt so joyful that on this Mother's Day I have this sweet baby boy in my arms.

I thought about you and my heart ached because I know you yearn for the opportunity that is mine. I want you to know that I share this day with you. My joy on Mother's Day is in part because of the smart decision you have made on your son's behalf. I am so glad that we had the opportunity to meet. I listened closely to your words and watched you interact with our baby boy so that I could tell him all about you as he grows up. I know the world has not been a kind place to you and I respect your resolve to show kindness to me. I will always remind him of the beautiful mother that he came from.

Zumbathon for Japan

In March, Japan was devastated with one of the largest recorded earthquakes and then a ferocious tsunami. Watching the footage and hearing the sad stories is heartbreaking. A fellow Zumba instructor is from Japan and organized a Zumbathon Fundraiser to raise money to help Japan. I was honored to be one of the instructors to participate in this event. Over $4000 was raised! It feels good to be able to do something I love to benefit a good cause.

Girls Weekend

Every year, for the past 11 years, my college roommates and I have gotten together for our annual girls weekend. It has become one of those life events that I count on to feed my soul. This year we planned on meeting in San Francisco (and stay at my place) in March. Well, life got complicated for a few of us and we had to cancel! Ahhh!!! I don't know if I can wait a whole year longer!

Good thing Caren was able to come with her hubby who was on a business trip here in San Fran, so we had ourselves a mini girls weekend.

Pedicures are a must!

Carrie cooked us up a yummy greek dinner that was Caren's recipe. Carrie brought all the food, plus her 2 cute boys and hubby. Did I mention she is pregnant too? Thanks, Carrie! You're amazing!

Zoe fell in love with Caren. Zoe wants to have her own girls weekend with Caren and have her paint polka dots on her toes!

Family Vacation

Our family started a tradition a few years ago... every time we finish reading the Book of Mormon we take a family trip. The first time we finished, we went to Disneyland! That was so fun... first time reading the Book of Mormon cover to cover as a family, and first time to Disneyland!

Last month we finished reading the Book of Mormon and decided to take a trip to Monterey Bay Aquarium. Another fun fun time!! First family vacation with Joshua! We loved it! (How is it possible that I forget to pack the camera on a family vacation??!! At least we had our i-phones!)

We learned about seahorses and what great dads they are. Seahorse dads actually give birth to their babies. I thought this was a sweet picture that I want to keep in my memory. Ben with Josh in the bjorn as a Devoted Dad.

It took Ben and I a long time to come up with a name, but we finally did!
We call him Joshie, Muffin, Love-bugs, Cutie
Mary calls him (very affectionately) Fisser, Bernod

He's Coming Home Today!!

He's coming home today!! (Feb. 7th)

What did I do until I could pick him up at 3:30? I taught a Zumba class, then went to the dentist, then wandered around aimlessly in my house, picked up the kids from school, then jammed to pick up our baby boy! For some reason, I didn't think I had time to shower that day, so I picked up my cute baby in my sweaty Zumba clothes, looking not picture-worthy.

Angels on Earth

How do I say thank you to J & C (keeping foster parent names confidential). There is no way to express the tender feelings in my heart.

I found an angel with these words imprinted, "God has many angels and I am sure you are one of them". J really is an angel on earth and of course her husband too!

J & C have an adorable little girl who is their foster daughter in their home. She is a ray of sunshine, and I could tell by the way she interacted with BJ that she loved him. She helped prepare BJ for all the love Zoe is going to give him! Zoe helped pick out a pair of princess shoes for BJ's sweet foster sister.

J told me that their church had been praying for the perfect family for BJ.
She said we are the answer to those prayers. I am humbled and grateful.

Dear J,

Thank you so much for your tender love given to BJ. The love and security he feels from you sets the foundation for him and I to create a lifelong mother/son attachment.

My life has been enriched by your example of charity. BJ and I will always hold a special place in our hearts for you.

The next day, Saturday, we brought the kids to meet their new baby brother! They were very excited, although Mary was a bit apprehensive.

This is the blanket that we all took turns sleeping with, then we brought it to our baby so he could sleep with it and start acclimating to our family. My heart rejoices that he is joining our family. At the same time, my heart aches thinking about the loss he will feel leaving his foster family who he loves and is bonded to.

Love at first sight

We arrived at 12:29 for our 12:30 appointment. We waited the necessary 30 seconds then ran to the door and knocked. He was sleeping so peacefully when we first saw him. Ben was the first to scoop him up and cuddle him. It was pretty sweet.

After 19 minutes and 34 seconds, I got a turn to hold the precious baby boy!

I was talking to him and he was just giggling and cooing. We are definitely a perfect match!

I absolutely love baby boy's foster mom. As soon as I walked into her home I could feel the goodness and happiness that encompasses this family. She loved him and nurtured him from birth and I am forever grateful to her.

The Phone Call

Friday, January 28th, I came in the door from walking the kids home from school and the first thing I notice is the red blinking message light on the answering machine, not unusual in my household. For some reason, I got butterflies in my stomach. I just knew...

I push the button and sure enough it says, "Hi Amy, this is Devon your social worker. Why don't you give me a call back when you get this message."

The butterflies in my stomach immediately tripled and I said out loud, "Its a baby!"

I called Devon back and I said, "I have butterflies..."

She replied, "Well, you should because you have been matched with a 4 month old baby boy!"

I have pretty much forgotten everything she said after that. All I know is that there is an adorable 4 month baby boy out there that could be mine!

We set up an appt for Tuesday morning for Ben and I to go in and get all of the details, which was waaaaaay toooooo loooooong!!!!!

What did we do that long weekend? We went bowling with grandma and grandpa and then Ben and I went on a date to the Cheesecake Factory so we could really have a heart to heart about what was about to happen to our family. I fell in love with Ben all over again after that date.

Tuesday morning finally came, but it really didn't matter what they said because I had already felt in my heart this baby boy was connected to us. We set up a time to go meet our baby boy, and with lots of tweaking Ben's schedule, we set it up for Friday at 12:30pm. Waaaaay toooooooo looooooong!

At the end of the meeting they showed us his picture... yep, its love!

These ladies have tons of paperwork, lots of beaurocracy to untangle, huge workloads... but they do heaven's work here on earth and I am forever grateful to them. Thanks for the phone call, Devon.

Happy Adoption Day!

Dear Mary,

On Jan 8th we celebrated another very Happy Adoption Day! We went on a special date and your heart was set on getting squishies from the quarter machines at Round Table pizza. We went and were so disappointed to find no squishies! So we went to the quarter machines at Safeway, still no squishies. Since there were no squishies in Walnut Creek, you decided to get some squinkies from Target. That was a huge success!

Then we went to San Francisco Creamery and ate some very tasty ice cream Sundaes.

We finished the day by eating the super yummy cake that you made.

Sit On the Curb

Ben was home on Monday night (which was such a treat for us!) so he said he was going to be in charge of FHE. I was thrilled to have him take charge and also curious to see what this sense of urgency was all about.

After dinner (and clean-up, of course) Ben says, "Everyone go sit on the curb." Everyone plants themselves down, and Zoe opens with a prayer saying, "Please bless dad to not do chores. Amen."

Ben announces, "We are now going to learn how to tie a shoe."

I had one of the best laughs I have had in a long time.
I so enjoyed watching him teach how to loop bunny ears.

To help ease the frustration of the shoe-tying-project. We roasted smores.

Today I went shoe shopping with Mary and bought velcro straps.
Hmmmm... not a reflection at all on the lesson, Benny. You were great!

The Beds are done!

A few months ago I told Ben that I found some cute white beds on craigslist for the girls. Ben swallowed the lump in his throat as he thought of having cheap white laminate in the house, so he lovingly offered to make them! My dad made my beds growing up, Ben and my dad made Caleb's bed, so I thought it would be good to stick to tradition. Here's how it flowed:

Ben gets straight to work and I just jump in the picture to appear to be industrious.

A few months later... the beds turn out beautiful! Ben and Zoe are ready to stain.

Ben and I are both disappointed in the stain. The individual pieces are all beautiful, but the combination isn't so pretty. Bummer, Ben spent a lot of time and money picking out the perfect wood.

We are bringing them in! Whoop Whoop!

They are perfect! Just what I was hoping for!

Christmas Morning 2010

Yippee! Its Christmas morning!

The best Christmas gift... the Harry Potter series!

The real best Christmas gift this year... Braden, our newest addition to my sister's family!

We love when Nicole and her family come to town!

Abby & Mary both got cameras from grandma this year!

Mom is very excited for all her new gardening decor!

Zoe takes a little rest with Toby on her brand new, hot pink, zebra comforter!

Every Christmas morning, the boys of the family, play catch with little "stuff" that they collect (new socks, stuffed animals, silly puddy eggs, etc). This year, Linzi had the brilliant idea of getting them real balls to play with. Definitely a highlight of Christmas day!

She even got them crocodile balls that you blow into and the balls balance in the air.
Good times!

Terry crocheted these hot pads for us. I love them!

Christmas Eve 2010

My favorite time of the whole Christmas season is Christmas eve night, when we have a special family home evening. This year, as usual, was so much fun!

We started the evening with some Christmas carols with grandpa.

Our new tradition, singing the 12 days of Christmas

Nicole read us a book about the first Christmas. Linzi then told the scriptural account
of the 1st Christmas while the kids put up pictures.

Zoe made reindeer food at preschool, so everyone helped put it on grandma's front lawn.

Marital Bliss

December 18th 2010 marks 12 years of marital bliss for Ben and I!

To celebrate we took our first trip on an airplane together! Vegas... here we come!

Fun Fun Fun!!!

Airport:

Okay, pretty much craziness!!! It took us 6 hours to check-in at the airport. I am not exaggerating! It took 6 hours not including security! We missed our 1st flight, then our 2nd flight, but finally made a 3rd flight out. Apparently, it was a historical day because channel 4 news came to report the madness. They interviewed our friend standing right behind us in line (I call him a friend, because we became quite close during 6 hours together).

Finally made it on the plane together! On our way!

Las Vegas:

We stayed in the Venetian Hotel. Check it out!

Grand Canyon:

We were picked up in a limo (another first for us!)

I had a very strange conversation today...

I ran into one of Mary's, classmate's mom on my way out from the gym. Super nice lady, super weird conversation... (luckily no kids were with me)

Lady: Your kids look SO different from you. Its so funny.

Me: Yes they do.

Lady: Does Caleb look like you?

Me: Hmmmm, I guess so...

Lady: Your girls don't look anything like you! Aren't you upset? You work so hard... and they look so different! Doesn't that bother you?

Me: Not in the least. I'm just glad all my kids are so beautiful!

My favorite conversation ever is when Caleb was 3, Mary was 1, and I had them out in the jogging stroller. I jogged passed a man strolling down the lane...

Man: Oh how cute... twins?

Me: (chuckle) Thank you!

Diminishing Fear

December has been quite a victorious month for Mary!

1) Ice-skating:
Mary's activity day girls went on an ice-skating trip. Mary told me she did not want to go and after trying to talk her into it, I finally relented. Well, a few minutes before the girls were going to leave, I told Mary I would go with her, if it would help her feel more comfortable. She said "no"... but then said... "well, okay." So off we went!

Cute girls... wonderful leaders! Before I even had my ice-skates tied, Mary was on the ice!

She was skating like a pro! Way to go, Mary!

Mary was so proud and excited that she told her friend, Isa and asked if she wanted to come ice-skating with her. Mary gave Isa a few pointers.

We all wanted to cheer Mary on!

The rest of us took a bit longer to get a handle on the ice.

2) Riding a bike:
Mary has been afraid to ride a bike. It was one of those things I thought was important and tried to push, but then realized, it will happen when Mary is ready. Well this month she was ready!

My heart skipped a beat! I'm so proud of you Mary!

Caleb showed us a few of his tricks too.

It helps motivate when your brother and sister are riding races around the court.

3) Performing in front of an audience:
Mary is not one to enjoy being the center of attention. She prefers to share her amazing talents at home with us. Her friend Emily asked Mary and Gillian if they would sing with her at the ward Christmas party. Mary responded, "I would be honored." Yes, I felt some tears well up when I heard that!

Mary, Emily, and Gillian sang Oh Christmas Tree. Music to my ears!

Way to be a challenger, Mary! You are victorious!

Kissing

I was driving Zoe and James home from preschool and this is what I heard in the backseat:

Zoe: Let's kiss

James: (shrugs) Okay

Zoe: Go like this (she gives a big smile, showing lots of teeth. James follows suit...)

Zoe: (giggles) That was fun! Lets kiss again!

Me: Uh... no kissing guys!

Zoe: Why?

I'm thinking of all types of philosophical answers... but this is what popped out of my mouth

Me: It is flu season and I don't want anyone to spread germs and get sick.

Zoe: But I WANT to kiss James!

James: I can kiss you on the cheek.

Me: Uh... no kissing at all, okay?

James: Okay

Later that night, I tuck Zoe in and give her a kiss goodnight...

Zoe: Is it flu season?

Happy Happy Thanksgiving

My favorite family tradition is our Thankful Thanksgiving Turkey. Every night we write down something we are grateful for on a paper feather and pin it up on our pumpkin Turkey. Its fun to see from year to year what we are grateful for. Here are the shortened lists this year:

Amy: Ben, Mrs. Timmer, Zumba
Caleb: Ethan, manners, fun, electronics
Mary: Toby, Spots, nature, church

Most of all we are grateful for family. Here is our fun family Thanksgiving Day

We always start Thanksgiving Day with a 5K Turkey Trot. This year my Aunt and cousins organized a Turkey Toddle to support homeless families. Kinda scary... we all look like bandits!

Ben had to work all week, but he drove to Roseville during the few hours he had off to be with us Thanksgiving morning... yeah! He was able to go on the Turkey Toddle with us, and then we had a Thanksgiving meal breakfast before he was off to work again.

This is my one cooking talent... Ribbon Jello Squares. They are so pretty, and quite tasty.

The 2nd Thanksgiving feast. My grandparents are front and center. They sure are an amazing couple who raised a pretty terrific family. I'm grateful to be a part of it.

Bancroft Walk-a-thon

The Bancroft Walk-a-thon was a huge success!

~ The kids loved it! They averaged about 11 laps which is almost 3 miles!
~ The music was a hit... everybody was singing
Peanut Butter Jelly Time (my favorite kids song of all time!)
~ The kids had fun dancing with me to warm-up and cool-down!
~We brought in a lot of money for the school! Yeah!

Lots of parents came to cheer on the kids and punch holes in their lap card!

Ethan's (Caleb's friend) little sister has a broken leg, so she helped us at the water station!

At recess time, all the kids who were not on the track would come line up and give high fives to the walk-a-thon runners! So cute!

Manners Dinner

There are 2 things that Ben is instilling in our children:

1) Hard workers - they know how to do chores well
2) Manners - there is no smacking at our dinner table

Ben felt like manners needed to be addressed in full force, so he planned a "Manners Dinner". Mary was eating it up (no pun intended). She would ask questions, and display appropriate behavior for all to see. Caleb found it hard to watch dad take a bite first, and then follow his example. He was one hungry boy. Zoe was just along for the ride and loving it.

These were some of my favorite phrases I heard from Ben that night.

1) Eating should not be a violent experience.
2) Take a reasonable size bite - you shouldn't dislocate your jaw to fit it all in.
3) Chew at a controlled speed.
4) Your mouth is not a dustpan - sit up!
5) I'll teach advanced techniques at a different time.

On October 27th we celebrated your 3rd adoption day! We had so much fun...

The best part is licking the beaters, of course.

Your cake turned out beautifully. You wanted it cut in half with the frosting in the middle,
like a cake sandwich. Then you put on all the candles from the box.

Your adoption day, is the day our family was born...
so we all like to have a piece of birthday cake.

Crafty Halloween

One thing I am not is crafty. So when one of the 4th grade parents emailed the teacher and said she could not do the halloween craft for the 4th grade party, I started panicking! As the room parent, I felt responsible to step up and take care of it. Luckily, I was whining about this predicament to my friend, Laura, who reminded me that our friend, Jenny (expert crafter), did a super cute duct tape purse craft with her activity day girls. I took her idea, found directions online and made these cute duct tape trick-r-treat bags!

I know... so cute... candy corns
easy...

Not quite easy. 34 kids, 3 parents, 28 rolls of duct tape... total chaos!
I wanted to take a picture, but there was no way... craziness!
(I know, Jenny, you totally warned me!)

Then I came home and made the cute trick-r-treat bags with my girls
and felt much better about myself.

Who knew duct tape came in such fun colors???!!!

Lets hope another parent never cancels on an art project again!
